VividCon, The Arrival (Thing 2's report)
I'll be trying to split these posts into sections, for those of you who are less interested in the social aspects, than just hearing about the vids. LJ cut tags will abound! Don't read if you don't want to be spoiled, and I'm going to be honest in my thoughts on the vids, so don't read if you don't want to hear it.
Thursday Arrival (blitherings about the trip, no vids mentioned here)
So we took off at a decent hour on Thursday, and the trip went pretty smoothly (despite my keeping Thing 1 awake on the plane, with my gibbering at her nervously every time we hit a 2 centimeter air bubble or pocket of turbulence) right up until we hit O'Hare. And, I hear we didn't have it as bad as some, but really that airport is awful. They listed about 27 connecting flights, and where the baggage would go for... other people, but not us. We tracked our luggage down, and then went in search of the hotel's shuttle. We walked, and we walked, and then we walked for a while, baffled at where the hell the shuttles were hidden. I swear we didn't walk anywhere near that distance last year, and we were both confused as to why things seemed so different this time around.
Once we'd finally found the shuttle, and were on our way, I became convinced... we were on the wrong shuttle. I imagined us heading to the other side of Chicago or something, we drove so long. Even other passengers in the shuttle, who were not imbued with my normal level of paranoia, were getting freaked out, but it turned out that serious construction in the area made for many, many detours.
At the hotel, we were assured by the front desk that 1) Our roommates
merryish and
the_shoshanna had not yet checked in and 2) that my package of handouts for the anime show had absolutely not arrived. Both statements were untrue. Not only had our roommates arrived, they appear to have spent a sizeable chunk of time arguing with the front desk about our room, and they had picked up the handouts for me. I was pleased, despite the misinformation, because it's usually me who has the fight with the front desk, and the handouts were safe and sound, and it had all been handled by
merryish instead of me. (
the_shoshanna I am told, was perfectly willing to trade our room for a fried rice menu...)
It was already pretty late by that time, so we basically just heaved our stuff into the room, checked to see if the ConCom needed our help (they didn't. They already had a small army of volunteers collating the reg packets with extreme efficiency), and then collected a few people and headed straight to the House of Meat (Outback) for what would be the first of four meals I ate there over the weekend.
And then it gets hazy. I know I hung out with people on Thursday night, but that's like... the depths of... the past, at this point. Those memories appear to have fallen right out of the back of my head. Maybe Thing 1 will remember and report, or something.
Next Up. Friday, and Shows! And, you know. Hopefully a post that's more interesting than this one.
