political crap, or Thing 1 ponders Dubya
I'm doing something appalling here; I'm posting something political with the clear intention of not getting into a conversation about it with anyone. I'm getting over a cold and my brain isn't working right, and I just can't muster up the energy to get into political discussion. So if you can deal with that and still want to see, by all means, read on. (That isn't to say you can't comment, obviously. It's just that I very much doubt I'll answer, whether I agree or disagree. Politics takes energy I just don't have right now.)
The United States' oh-so-beloved president is once again showing his true right-wing colors.
I'll say up front that I have no problem with people who truly believe that sentient life begins at conception. I disagree, but that's just disagreement.
My problem comes when people try to tell me I should pay more attention to their conscience than to my own. My really big problem comes when my government uses its bully pulpit to try to cram its version of morality down my throat. Witness Dubya, who has declared a "National Sanctity of Human Life Day" on January 19, saying "Every child is a priority and a blessing." (CNN story) He means this as a way of getting the entire country to agree that abortion, any abortion, for any reason whatsoever, is Wrong. Big, capital-dubya Wrong, according to capital-dubya Dubya.
But I say, let's not assume the worst. Let's take him at his word -- that word also being that we should all "reaffirm the value of human life" -- and send him our congratulations and thanks for seeing that all life is precious. Because obviously, anyone who truly believes that, enough to declare a national day dedicated to the concept, is going to call off the war against Iraq.
I mean -- he can't possibly have meant just American babies, right? He can't possibly have meant that we should "reaffirm the value of human life [as long as its born in one particular geopolitical place and noplace else]."?
No, of course not. He said it himself, after all. "Every child". "Human life". No qualifiers there (although he makes it plain that only Americans are entitled to the pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness -- sorry, rest-of-world, your life has value but apparently you can suffer for it).
So, this time, three cheers for Dubya! He's calling off the war, to save all those precious lives!
Isn't he?
