new vid! Doctor Who, Handlebars

Our Vividcon Premieres vid is up now:

Vid title: Handlebars
Song artist: Flobots
Fandom: Doctor Who (2005)
Vidders: Seah and Margie (Flummery)
Vidder website: http://flummery.org
Summary: I'm the Doctor. Look me up.

Notes: Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] merryish for the all the help, and especially all the baking, without which this vid probably never would have been finished in time. (she made us say that -- but it's true anyway.)

Right-click to download: http://flummery.org/handlebars/handlebars_dw_flummery.avi

There's a streaming version up on our imeem (http://flummery.imeem.com), but it's a little stuttery in spots and we're not sure why. Hopefully we'll get it figured out and fixed soon.

Imeem went boom, so we put a streaming version up on our site, which you can watch there or here:

ETA April 17, 2012: Our streaming vids are temporarily offline while we look into a technical issue. Sorry! The download still works, and we'll get the streaming version back up as soon as we can.

This impressed the hell out of me. Just so you know.

I AM GIVING THAT A SLOW CLAP.

I think it was the 3rd or 4th time I heard that song on the radio that I actually listened to all the lyrics and went "whoa, this isn't just a silly, catchy song." My experience watching Doctor Who has been rather similar, in the way that the wacky fun adventures pull you in, but then when you really pay attention to it there's this dark rummination on power and how it can corrupt.

A seriously fantastic character study of the ambivalence of the Doctor.

Wow, that made less sense than I thought it did before I posted it. It's because I had to force myself to stop rewatching the vid to try to form thoughts and clearly not all my brain came with me. *rewatches some more*

To quote my reaction as I sat in my empty apartment for five minutes after watching this:

Wow. Wow. Wow.

The way you put this together, particularly as a statement about the Doctor, himself, is absolutely brilliant. The song lends itself to vidding, and the escalation in it is powerful on its own, but mixed with the increasingly destructive image of the Doctor, and particularly in the context the Series 4 ending, it fit in a truly organic (and more than a little frightening) way. Lovely, lovely job.

An excellent vid!

This is awesome. I haven't seen more than 1 or 2 episodes of Doctor Who, but you did a fantastic job of choosing visuals that speak for themselves -- the manic slide from exuberance to hubris is really effectively disturbing.

You know, the second I saw the song/fandom combination, I knew this would be BRILLIANT.

AND IT WAS. =O OH MAN. This song is so perfect for the doctor as I see him, that slow side from innocence into VIOLENCE. The Harriet Jones clip in particular was GENIUS, along with the end clip - with a snap of his fingers.

Just. this is amazing, and I'm going to go watch it another 6 times now.

Here on [livejournal.com profile] such_heights's rec.

Awesome, awesome vid. The thing that really stood out that I can articulate is the doctor, in blue, with his feet on the desk, and the gleeful-ness with the first verse and then the cut back to that at the end and new view of it.

Going to rewatch it a couple of times now, now that I know what happens in the song. It was very effective with that development.

AaaAah!

I am usually not much for vids-as-meta, but...wow. That was really very good.

I stopped watching new Who halfway through Ten's first season and this illustrates perfectly why. Really well done, thank you!

Good marriage of music, lyric, and visual. I don't know anything about vids, and I know this is an awesome one.

Whoa. I'm here from a rec by [livejournal.com profile] sophia_helix.
I kept thinking, "The lyrics and the images couldn't possibly get more in-synch...and, then, THEY DID."

[identity profile] flummery.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Do you know, we had completely forgotten about the web version of the vid until about halfway through the actual con? People starting posting their vids, and we were like: "...huh." So we flew back, cabbed back, went straight to the computer without unpacking, pounded on the keyboard until we managed to export it properly, and then... fell into comas for 48 hours.

Thank you so much, we're so you enjoyed it!

Thank you!

Thank you! We're so glad you liked it! And the song is a new group out of Colorado, who are pretty darn amazing, actually.

You would not believe how hard this song ear-wormed us! I am still playing it endlessly. Thank you so much for your kind words!
