new vid! Doctor Who, Handlebars

Our Vividcon Premieres vid is up now:

Vid title: Handlebars
Song artist: Flobots
Fandom: Doctor Who (2005)
Vidders: Seah and Margie (Flummery)
Vidder website: http://flummery.org
Summary: I'm the Doctor. Look me up.

Notes: Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] merryish for the all the help, and especially all the baking, without which this vid probably never would have been finished in time. (she made us say that -- but it's true anyway.)

Right-click to download: http://flummery.org/handlebars/handlebars_dw_flummery.avi

There's a streaming version up on our imeem (http://flummery.imeem.com), but it's a little stuttery in spots and we're not sure why. Hopefully we'll get it figured out and fixed soon.

Imeem went boom, so we put a streaming version up on our site, which you can watch there or here:

ETA April 17, 2012: Our streaming vids are temporarily offline while we look into a technical issue. Sorry! The download still works, and we'll get the streaming version back up as soon as we can.

An excellent vid!

Thank you!!

This is awesome. I haven't seen more than 1 or 2 episodes of Doctor Who, but you did a fantastic job of choosing visuals that speak for themselves -- the manic slide from exuberance to hubris is really effectively disturbing.

[identity profile] flummery.livejournal.com 2008-08-24 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! Hopefully this will encourage you to watch a few more! ;)

You know, the second I saw the song/fandom combination, I knew this would be BRILLIANT.

AND IT WAS. =O OH MAN. This song is so perfect for the doctor as I see him, that slow side from innocence into VIOLENCE. The Harriet Jones clip in particular was GENIUS, along with the end clip - with a snap of his fingers.

Just. this is amazing, and I'm going to go watch it another 6 times now.

[identity profile] flummery.livejournal.com 2008-08-25 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much! DW was the only fandom we even considered for this song, because it's such a perfect match. And I'm so glad the Harriet Jones bit worked so well for you; that was one of the first clips we thought of immediately, and one of the first clips we laid down. Yay!

Here on [livejournal.com profile] such_heights's rec.

Awesome, awesome vid. The thing that really stood out that I can articulate is the doctor, in blue, with his feet on the desk, and the gleeful-ness with the first verse and then the cut back to that at the end and new view of it.

Going to rewatch it a couple of times now, now that I know what happens in the song. It was very effective with that development.

Yay, I'm so glad the progression worked for you! Thank you!

AaaAah!

I am usually not much for vids-as-meta, but...wow. That was really very good.

I stopped watching new Who halfway through Ten's first season and this illustrates perfectly why. Really well done, thank you!

[identity profile] flummery.livejournal.com 2008-08-25 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! We're fascinated that this vid seems to speak both to people who like, and don't like, Ten's seasons, and we're pleased it seems to say the same thing to both groups!

That was So. Awesome.

Ya'll rock.

Good marriage of music, lyric, and visual. I don't know anything about vids, and I know this is an awesome one.

[identity profile] flummery.livejournal.com 2008-08-25 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! And you know, that's how it starts -- we knew nothing either, but they just hook you in and then you're trapped. *g*

Whoa. I'm here from a rec by [livejournal.com profile] sophia_helix.
I kept thinking, "The lyrics and the images couldn't possibly get more in-synch...and, then, THEY DID."

Yay, thank you! And thank you so much for your rec, as well. \O/

Here on [livejournal.com profile] bradcpu's recommendation... this is marvellous! It is the Ten vid I have been waiting for! (And if you'd heard me yack away about how DW vids rarely hit the right note for me you'd know that's a big call.) The song is in an inspired choice and the intro in particular was absolutely spine-tingly. I *knew* 13 seconds in that this was going to ping the right way for me. You capture so well both the aspects I love about the Doctor and the ones I hate--it's very truthful to the new series, and captures Ten perfectly. I love that you show the surface Ten, as well as his darker layers. I think the relationship between the two is the most compelling aspect of the Doctor, for me, so vids that only deal with the darker/angstier or (sigh) schmoopier aspect of the Doctor don't always work for me, alas, despite their being many great vidders of the fandom. This vid really nailed 'my' (viewing of the) Doctor: thank you!

[identity profile] flummery.livejournal.com 2008-08-25 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
(*hearts Reinette*)

Thank you so much!

I *knew* 13 seconds in that this was going to ping the right way for me.

Oh, this is such a cool thing to hear. Yay! Both of us are long-time Who fans, and the layers of his personality and how they shift with each incarnation is hugely fascinating to us both, and never moreso than with Ten, really -- he goes to either extreme so easily, and his extremes are *so* extreme. I'm so glad the vid worked for you!

[identity profile] merryish.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
I know I've said it before... in fact... I TOLD YOU SO! ... but officially -- this vid is amazing, and I'm wildly happy for you two and proud of you and I now plan to drop your names liberally into every conversation I have with anyone even remotely connected to fandom. Just so you know.

Did I mention, I told you so? AWESOME.

[identity profile] flummery.livejournal.com 2008-08-25 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
*hugs you madly*

[identity profile] jujuberry136.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
This is one of the coolest things I have ever seen. Though I've hear the song about a million times this summer, I hadn't realized how perfect it is about describing the doctor.

Seriously, this was AWESOME.

:D

Thank you so much!

This was THE vid of the con for me. I love it so, so much. I hope to have something smart to say about it soon. (:

*STARES* That is just amazing. Fun and fluffy right up until it gets really really scary, that's so very, very incredibly Ten. *goes to download so I can watch fifty billion times*

[identity profile] jacquez.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
ok now, there has to be a name for that structure in a song, where you start out small (I can ride my bike with no handlebars) and then you escalate to something really big (I can end the planet in a holocaust) and then you go back to small again.

...this comment is totally not about the vid, is it? sorry. i am fascinated by the song structure because it's a common one and it needs a naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaame.

o.O

[identity profile] flummery.livejournal.com 2008-08-25 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
Huh -- you're right, it *has* to have a name. It's one of my favorite song structures (also, really good for vidding, because you get a climax in the middle!) If you figure out what it is, please let us know!

I watched the video, and it was every bit as awesome as [livejournal.com profile] mswyrr said when she recced it. It reminded me of this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=beb_FGnMpQ8) actually, but with a better song and more elegant and cohesive editing.

Everything she said about it capturing the personality of the Doctor is true... I loved that it builds and builds, from little "fun" things to big, scary things. And Ten certainly seems to embody the wide range therein. The last minute (my cause is noble, my power is pure) just blows the viewer away. (almost literally!)

I adored it.

Just wanted to say that I recced this at my journal here (http://black-eyedgirl.livejournal.com/81947.html#cutid1), because it says everything I wanted to about Ten, but way more eloquently. I'm just in awe!

[identity profile] flummery.livejournal.com 2008-08-26 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much, both for the very kind words and for the rec!

[identity profile] cherryice.livejournal.com 2008-08-22 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
THIS. I love this song, I love this vid, and I love, love, love your take on Ten. The editing is impeccable and the crescendo is pitch-perfect, escalating from smiles and laughter to the horror and devastation the Doctor can leave behind him.

Perfect.

[identity profile] flummery.livejournal.com 2008-08-26 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! We couldn't resist the build in the music, and I'm so glad it worked so well for you. Yay!
