new vid! Doctor Who, Handlebars

Our Vividcon Premieres vid is up now:

Vid title: Handlebars
Song artist: Flobots
Fandom: Doctor Who (2005)
Vidders: Seah and Margie (Flummery)
Vidder website: http://flummery.org
Summary: I'm the Doctor. Look me up.

Notes: Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] merryish for the all the help, and especially all the baking, without which this vid probably never would have been finished in time. (she made us say that -- but it's true anyway.)

Right-click to download: http://flummery.org/handlebars/handlebars_dw_flummery.avi

There's a streaming version up on our imeem (http://flummery.imeem.com), but it's a little stuttery in spots and we're not sure why. Hopefully we'll get it figured out and fixed soon.

Imeem went boom, so we put a streaming version up on our site, which you can watch there or here:

ETA April 17, 2012: Our streaming vids are temporarily offline while we look into a technical issue. Sorry! The download still works, and we'll get the streaming version back up as soon as we can.

I love this vid SO. MUCH. I had downloaded it before, but sadly lost it due to computer issues. So I'm just commenting to say that I'm downloading it again, and that it's still as awesome as it was the first time I watched it. :D

I wandered in from a rec on crack_van, and O. M. G. I'm not usually much of a vid watcher but this was sheer brilliance. I got chills down my spine, seriously, chills down my spine.

Wow. I just watched "Waters of Mars," and you *called* it. Have the Internets. *bows and hands them over*

[identity profile] vivian-lake.livejournal.com 2009-11-17 10:37 am (UTC)(link)
And another Internet from me. This fanvid was the first thing I thought about after reading spoilers for that episode.

I think I've commented here before, but after "Waters of Mars", I had to come back and say that y'all NAILED it. It was always an amazing vid, and now it's even more relevant.

So, okay, I am very late in leaving a comment on this because I downloaded the video months ago after thefourthvine recced it. It's just that...well, I don't know if you want to hear that your vid is helping to keep me from watching Doctor Who.

Tenth doctor, that is. I rented Season One of new!Who and fell in love with Nine and Rose and Jack. And then the next week I happened to flip channels and see Ten get Rose locked away in some alternate dimension that she'll never be able to leave. Well, you can imagine my feelings... Then I catch Ten apparently trying to leave Jack back in Cardiff, and that does it, I'm flipping channels again. But everybody keeps talking about how cute and nerdy David Tennant is. Should I give it another try? Finally, I saw this video. This is definitely not the "everybody lives" Doctor I love. So, I guess maybe I'll wait and see what the Eleventh Doctor is like; this Doctor I'm skipping.

You can't watch an intentionally bleak video (though a brilliant one) that takes things out of context, and a few snippets from another episode, and judge a character. You could do the same thing with nine and he wouldn't look all that wonderful either. (btw, it was nine that left jack on satellite five, knowing he was alive, because he felt "wrong".)
at least check out the first couple episodes with ten - the christmas invasion and "new earth". If you still don't like ten, well at least you'll know you gave it a try. Cause boy he's wonderful - he's been best described as "complex" - he's kind, compassionate, heroic, manic and friendly. He can also be ruthless when you cross him. And rude. and those 3 seasons with him had some great moments.
Anyway, even if you decide not to give him a try, at least check out "blink" from the 3rd season. A great episode that was voted as one of the top tep episodes of all time - and it only has a few brief cameos from ten. So even if you don't like him you'll probably enjoy it.

So so fantastic!! You've captured clearly all the complexities of Ten. Great balance of the silly (love the expression on his face as he rides the segway!) to his angsty/angry/scary moments. Love it!

I've seen this video a bunch of times, but am finally getting around to commenting. I haven't seen a bunch of vids, but I really love the way you edit in time to music--the Doctor scratching his head in time to the music, the little tiny motions to the rhythm that you put together. That just has to take an assload of work, so, kudos.

I'm also totally in love with how well you build the narrative, from the Doctor's playful joy at his own competance into the fantasy of total power that the song leads you down, which is very much also a facet of the Doctor. He's not innocent, as much as his innocence tries to tell you he is.

Anyway, I love it, and I ran around yesterday gratuitously showing it to everyone I met. *g*

(BTW: I can't get the download to work. I put the link into a window, but the vid never loads, and then if I try to just save it I get nada. In what way am I failing? I'm highly confused.

[identity profile] flummery.livejournal.com 2009-11-22 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much!

For downloading, all you should need to do is put your cursor over the link and right-click your mouse, then click "save [target/link/file] as" and pick a download location on your computer.

Pasting the URL into a new window won't really work - the avi isn't meant to stream (there will be a streaming version here soon -- I didn't realize we hadn't added the new streaming version here after imeem went down *headdesk*).

Hope that helps!

Wow. Those lyrics describe the Doctor perfectly. Great vid!

You are more awesome than I can say. I have watched this so many times since downloading it 2 days ago, and I'm still going.

Oh lord, the progression is just sublime. I knew he had it in him, but it's not until you see it in this kind of summary format that it becomes so fucking obvious.

You've also managed to change certain scenes' contexts for me. Bits that i thought RTD had written cheesily and a bit melodramatically, in this video, become chillingly arrogant and actually scared me. The click at the end took on a whoooole new meaning for me. I liked it, in the same way it scared the pants off me.

WONDEFUL x INFINITY

{ETA: i forgot to say that the awesome [livejournal.com profile] kita0610 linked me here after the waters of mars. This made me enjoy that downward spiral from the end of that special even moooaar.}

I saw this video mentioned several times in discussions about WoM and decided to come check it out. Now that I've downloaded, all I have to say is wow! You're prophetic.

Fantastic job building the a narrative to critique Ten for the dangerous self-righteousness, recklessness, and general darkness that has been there all along in between the moments of heroism and goofiness. (It's in the other Doctors also, to a certain extent, but even before WoM this aspect of the Doctor has been particularly strong in Ten.) I don't know enough about vidding to comment very intelligently, but the editing and pacing worked really well for me.

Excellent! Love this!

Oh, that's good. I like the build through the song, that you matched with the visuals. Power corrupts, I believe that that's the message...

Hello,

I found this via gazzatrek on Youtube, and just wanted to tell you how much I adore it. To whit: ALOT. I can't stop watching it. It's hands down the best fanvid I've ever seen, and you've done a masterful job of editing it. Thank you so much for it.

I just watched Water on Mars for the first time and remembered that people mentioned your vid in connection with it. I'm so glad you made it. I'm super impressed! It totally encapsulates Ten at the end of the episode.

Wonderful

I'm very grateful you keep finding ways to keep this vid on the web because I need my fey whimsy fix every now and then. This is a perfect blend of song and the Doctor and his companions.

Keep up the good work!

That's so impressive. I streamed it, but now I'm downloading it.

This video is awesome. I'd never heard of the song before I saw it, so I was like "oh, Ten's goofing off, cute" and then WHOA. I love the progression of the narrative, and all the clips fit the lyrics perfectly.

I have a question, though- I downloaded the file, but in Windows Media Player I only get the sound and not the visuals. Is there any way I can fix this?
